RBC Mentorship: January Applications

Are you interested in learning more about the banking industry? Do you want a chance to meet with RBC professionals? Here’s your chance!

Career Services offers a dynamic partnership with RBC to promote mentorship between students and professionals. During the course of the academic year, as a student in the RBC Corporate Mentorship program you will meet with an RBC staff member each month. Participation is voluntary, and you will need to commit to 3-4 hours per month.

In previous years mentors have had the following jobs with RBC:
  • Investment and Retirement Planner
  • Financial Planner
  • Branch Manager
  • Financial Services Representative
  • Investment Advisor
  • Client Care Manager
  • Commercial Account Manager

Your Personal Brand

From the crocodile on your polo to the initials on your underwear, you are branded. Why do you automatically know what the words Nike and Coca Cola mean? It’s because they’re the top two recognized brands in the world… they’re so international the only other word that beats it is “no”. And it’s all because of their strong brand campaigns. Everywhere you look there are brands: the browser you’re reading this from, the chocolate milk the guy across the hall is drinking… where does your name stand in the mix of things? It’s time you become more than the brands you use and stand out by developing your own personal brand.

You might wonder what the point of branding yourself is. Simple, who do you think will look more professional, the applicant with a plain resume – or the one with a logo and business card? Personal branding is the process of marketing ourselves to others and making our name represent our specialties.

To brand yourself you must first know yourself. Is your self-impression equal to how people perceive you? Do you know your strengths and skills well enough to specialize? Here’s a few ways you can start defining your name to the public:

1.       Business Cards
Carry a few with you at all times – you never know when you could give one out! And if someone ever asks for your information it’s an easy solution.

2.       Resume
Your resume should describe your skills and focus on your area of specialization.

3.       Portfolio
Keep a collection of work you’ve done in relation to your specialization so you may showcase your work to potential employers.

4.       Blog/Website
Having a blog or website to showcase your work is a great asset. You could even include this information on your business card.

5.       Linked In
Complete your LinkedIn profile and connect with professionals. The people you are connected to are just as important as the words on your page. Remember – this is a professional profile, don’t go adding people you met at the bar or old highschool friends unless it’s for networking purposes.

6.       Facebook Profile
Use your privacy settings! Facebook even updated the interface to make it easier for you. Keep your status updates professional – using lyrics to describe how sad your life is is unnecessary.

7.       Tweets
Is your twitter account focused on specific topics or are you tweeting people about how much you drank last night and responding to every possible trend. If your account isn’t protected then your tweets had better follow your personal brand.

8.       Wardrobe
Your wardrobe makes a lasting impression. A classmate of mine always wore a skate hat & wanted it to be part of his brand image. Once you make a decision like that you have to stick with it. If he showed up in a suit one day it would seem out of character for his brand. Chose a wardrobe that suits you and your personality.

9.       Email Address will probably not receive an email after she drops off her resume. If you haven’t already switched to Google do it now! will look a lot more professional, and it’s more efficient than Hotmail too.

By branding yourself you are attaching your name to a specific area of expertise. To make your brand last you need to walk, talk and breathe it. Create a brand manual to assist you in keeping to your brand. The manual should describe in detail what your brand is, why it was created, future goals and standards. Begin creating your personal brand over the holidays so the next time you tell someone your name, they’ll know exactly what it means.

Large Company vs. Not-for-Profit: Who do you want to work for?

Deciding on the type of company you want to work for after graduation is usually not a question many people ask. Usually students have an idea if what industry they would like to be a part of, but haven’t considered the advantages or disadvantages of working for a corporate versus non-profit organization. There are many differences and it is something that you have to think about as it corresponds with your working style greatly.

Non-Profit          Advantages: Obviously working for a non-profit is extremely rewarding. The misconception still exists, however, that those who dedicate their lives to working non-profit work more hours for less money. This simply isn’t true. There are so many skills to learn and growth within organizations by taking this path. As non-profits get more sophisticated in how they do their business, they are looking for anyone to utilize their skills to change the lives of others.
                                Disadvantages: Working for a non-profit means you have to work miracles with very limited resources. Usually, there are no concrete ways to measure just how much of an impact you are making. The ability to raise money is extremely important, so every penny spent has to be planned and accounted for. This leads to many working in this field to burn out early in their careers.
Large Corporations         Advantages: Working at a large corporation means you get to meet a lot of new people who are of all ages and stages in their career. More people stay at large companies because they have security and enjoy the work they do. Many large corporations also offer perks such as trips and gym memberships to their employees who have worked there for a few years.
                            Disadvantages: Job descriptions are often set in stone and there may not be a lot of room to move around once you get your foot in the door. Promotions can only go so high and many people dislike the routine of the standard 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. job. Many new grads do not get the opportunity to work in a position where they make decisions, so all work must be approved by someone else which can be frustrating and time consuming.
Thinking about this information now can save you making a costly mistake in the future. Choosing what kind of environment suits your work style should be high on your priority list and is a great question to ask an employer on an interview. So what will it be, non-profit or large corporation? You decide.

Tips for Introverts on Networking

So you're a little shy. Maybe you like to keep to yourself sometimes. You're an introvert - and that's okay!! Your skills and accomplishments are just as important as everyone else's. It also means that you, as a student or potential job-seeker, need to learn the ropes of networking!

Never fear, Career Services is here!

As an introvert myself I've learned that successful networking is beneficial to both my personal and professional goals - I've learned to be more confident and clear when explaining my past experiences and have also learned to take more initiative in setting up a networking experience. It's amazing how the more you practice, the more comfortable you are in speaking to and/or meeting with professionals!

Here are a couple tips for my introverted friends out there:

  • Remember those things called Information Interviews? They're a great way to network one-on-one with professionals who are in your current position of interest. These are less intimidating situations that can allow you to obtain great information from a professional. They can happen in-person or over the phone. A great stepping stone to other forms of networking!
  • Do your research before attending networking events or meeting with employers. If you feel more comfortable with your knowledge on the company, you'll feel better about getting up to approach professionals or other people within a networking setting.
  • Know yourself! If you're confident about your skills and abilities, talking about them with others will come a lot more naturally.
  • Practice, practice practice. Not sure about your interview skills or how you would answer certain questions that employers may ask you? Try your hand at Interview Stream to perfect responses to a variety of questions you may come into contact with.
  • Update your online profile(s). Yes - that means twitter, your blog, LinkedIn, and even facebook. Make sure your social networking sites that are meant to be private stay private, and update the rest to reflect your achievements and career goals. A lot of networking nowadays can take place online - so make sure that you maintain a professional online image.
Bottom line: Always take advantage of networking opportunities regardless of your comfort level!

Writing Resumes

Resume Writing takes time and energy. Its is the one document that showcases all your eduaction, skills, and experience and is a key document for so many applications; work, post-grad, scholarships etc. A resume is a personal document that can be customized and tailored to your liking, however requires some key information in order to best highlight yourself.

Your resume is fundamental to any job search because it provides important inforamtion about you such as;
  • your career goals
  • your work/volunteer experience and extracurricular involvement
  • your academic/educaional achievements
  • your skills and accomplishments
Your resume is a representation of you on paper. The information you choose to include, the words you use, and how you express yourself in writing are all critical.

Here are some quick tips for creating your resume:
  • have a job/career goal in mind when writing your resume
  • keep your information relevant to the job/employer you are applying to
  • highlight your accomplishments as opposed to general job duties
  • have it proofread, and review it for spelling/grammatical errors

Today's entrepreneurship tip describes different types of business structures. We discuss some of the early questions that an entrepreneur must ask before committing to a business:
  • Will your business be a for-profit enterprise, a not-for-profit or somewhere in between?

  • What type of financing should you target: equity, debt, grant funding or a combination of all three?

TESOL/TESL Certification

Have you ever thought of teaching English abroad? With an opportunity to immerse yourself in a different culture, meet all kinds of interesting people, and secure a teaching position overseas, it's definitely something worth looking into!

TESL(Teaching English as a Second Language) and TESOL(Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certification courses are offered by plenty of different companies in a variety of areas all over the nation. Some are more accredited than others though, so make sure you do your research!

Making SMART Goals

Goals are probably the easiest thing to make, but also the easiest thing to break--Unless you're doing your part, and making them SMART!

As a 4th year student who is taking 5 courses, works on campus, volunteers within the community, and enjoys hanging out with friends, getting through my weekly tasks was always a challenge; until I made SMART goals. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely and here is how your goals, can be SMART.

Specific- Your goals should be straightforward and emphasize what you want to have happen; what are you going to do? How are you going to do it? Why are going to do it? What is its importance?
Measurable- Choose a goal with a measure progress this way you can watch the change occur.
Attainable- The goal should stretch you slightly so you feel you can do it while staying committed to it. Goals which are too far out of your reach you probably won't commit to it.
Realistic- This means the goal should be 'do-able'; it may push your skills and knowledge as you work on your goal, but it shouldn't break you; set the bar high enough for a satisfying achievement
Timely- Set a time frame for the goal- 1 week, 2 months etc; this will give you a clear target to work towards; without a time limit there is no urgency to start taking action now. Don't forget: the time you set must also be measurable, attainable and realistic!

I wish you all the best as you set and achieve your goals. Remember: Nothing is impossible, the word itself says 'I'm possible'!

The Right Education for You

Have you ever thought about your educational pathway and where it's taking you? Sure, you might be in University right now, but there are a ton of options out there to add additional qualifications to your degree.

For example, Brock has a ton of Articulation Agreements, Joint Programs, and Collaborative Programs with other education institutions that allow students to complete their undergraduate degree and a college program within 4 years of study. This is a great way to experience both theory-driven learning and practical, hands-on schooling that will prepare you for a career in a specific field.

Have you thought about doing a College Post-Grad Program after you graduate? This is a great option that won't take up much of your time - these graduate certificates are only 1-2 years in length and are designed for students who already have a university degree or college diploma. These programs are specific and targeted toward a certain career or field and can help get you where you'd like to go.

Graduate School or Professional School are also options if your chosen career path dictates you need Master's level knowledge or above. Make sure you do your research before choosing to enter any kind of further education - you want to be sure that your career goal actually requires this kind of financial and time committment!

It's Happening!

We are half way through International Education Week, and Jack McIsacc has been half way around the world. Monday he was in Peru, Tuesday he was in England, and today Jack is visiting somewhere in Africa.

Ready for an Adventure? Apply to Go Abroad!

Since it's International Education Week here at Career Services we'd like to emphasize the incredible opportunities that students (or anyone, for that matter!) have to travel abroad. The options are endless - you could study a semester abroad in Britain, or volunteer in the summer in Kenya...the sky's the limit!

This week we are focusing on four main paths that students normally take when deciding to go overseas - studying abroad, interning abroad, volunteering abroad and working abroad. Whatever your goals may be, Career Services is here to help you make the best decision for you.

A great resource to help you get started is available exclusively to Brock Students via CareerZone - under the Resources section. Going Global is an international database that boasts a variety of tools that students can access when researching into a country, looking for an internship, or exploring job opportunities around the world. A great way to start planning your time abroad would be to explore this website - it has information on everything from visas, cultural advice, to employment trends in each country!

On our website, we have a variety of links that you can also explore in regard to international internships, study abroad programs, and volunteer agencies that operate all over the world. Check out our Online Job Boards & Programs for some of these great links. Check out our Work Abroad section as well, which hosts a variety of resources for those looking to be employed in a different country.

Planning to go abroad can be a daunting task, but there are a ton of resources available both online and in the Career Resource Centre that can help you get started. Today's the Day- Career and Post-Grad Expo


Today is the day we've all been waiting for. CAREER AND POST-GRADUATE EXPO 2011! Tables are ready, exhibitors are in the midst of registering and setting up, and doors will open soon.

There are approximately 120 exhibitors showcasing employment organziations, non-profit organizations, and educational institutions. There is something for everyone. If you have yet to register it's not too late, and can be done from Career Zone.

We look forward to seeing you at some point today. Even if you aren't a graduating student we encourage you to come by and take a peek. Its never to late to start planning your future!

Dress Code at Career Expo

To make the best first impression to an employer, dressing appropriately should be a no brainer. You should be surprised, however, at how many people don’t make the effort to look their best. Sam and I made a video on “What Not To Wear” for job interviews this summer which would be a good first place to start if you aren’t too sure what you should be wearing, with examples from our wonderful models, Stephen and Sonya.
For our Career & Post-Graduate Expo event, it is encouraged that attendees dress business casual. A popular question that many people ask is what business casual dress actually consists of. Obviously there are differences between male and female business casual, which I will attempt to explain (I wouldn’t leave you to work it out on your own… J)

For females, dress pants or a knee length skirt should be worn. Jeans are definitely not appropriate, or anything too baggy or skin tight for that matter. A top or shirt which is not low cut would be fine and a jacket or cardigan would be optional. For shoes, low heels that are closed at the heels that are closed at the toes should be worn and keeping jewelry to the minimum keeps your look classy and professional.
For males, suits are always the best way to go. Ties should be worn, but again, jackets would be optional. Shirts should be long sleeved and ironed and shoes polished. It’s that simple!

A general note to everyone would be to stay away from chewing gum and heavy perfume/aftershave. Hair should be clean and tidy and having a shower before the event wouldn’t hurt. Employers do like you to be clean. Who would have thought?

I have also heard that people try and dress for the company they are applying to. So, if they wanted to get a job at Sportchek for example, they would go to their interview in track pants and running shoes. I can see the logic, but it is always better to be the one person dressed up than the one person who didn’t make an effort.
I really like this website that goes into detail about the guidelines for business casual. Just remember, as students, you aren’t expected to buy a new wardrobe for interviews. Looks are meant to be classic, not trendy and expensive. Having just one outfit that you are comfortable in will help your confidence and land you the job of your dreams!

Preparing to Meet with Employers: Career Expo

If you haven’t already researched the organizations coming to the Career & Post-Graduate Expo, now is the time to do so! We have over 100 post-grad institutions, employers and non-profit organizations attending who are eager to network and recruit Brock students and alumni. Many students have found their dream jobs at the Expo, and doing your research of attendees saves time and allows you to focus your efforts on companies that interest you.

We really do have something for everyone this year. Whether you are a business student, in Recreation and Leisure studies, Computer Science or Community Health, there are organizations that want to talk to you. A full list can be found in our guidebook which is available in the Career Resource Centre, online on the Career Services Website, or on the downloadable app.

I can’t emphasize enough how important doing research is before you attend. You may look through the list of attendees and come to the conclusion that no organization is relevant to what you are studying at Brock. This couldn’t be further from the truth! Service Canada, for example, is looking for majors in Community Health, Sociology, Nursing, Biological Science, Political Science and English. If you didn’t do your research, you might not have given them a second thought. You will be surprised who is hiring for what positions, and the only way to know is to research them beforehand.

A major turn off for employers is to have potential employees ask them what they are hiring for. Don’t be that person! If you are serious about finding a job, have your research done and know what positions are available so you are ahead of the curve.

Business Cards

Career Expo is next week already! This much anticipated event could potentially add some professional contacts to your network circle. The best way to connect with employers is the good ol’ fashioned business card swaperoo. We’ll call it a Networking Card for our purposes since you’re still a student.

By offering your networking card to an employer you are extending your relationship beyond your elevator pitch and encourage further discussion. Your card should definitely include your full name, email and phone number (define whether it’s home or cell). Some extras might be your website/blog/linked in, university program/year of study, skill words or title of specialization. Don’t cram too much information onto your card – you want to be concise and professional. If you’re a creative type, Google business card designs to get the juices flowing.

Remember, the Career and Post Graduate Expo is not a job fair – it is an opportunity to network. Although employers and organizations are looking to fill positions they may not necessarily take your resume on the spot. Ask to swap business cards and contact them after the Expo to touch base and remind them of your first interaction & your interest to pursue a position with their company.

You can have your cards printed by Brock University’s printing services, but Staples is just as good. If you’re a business student I believe you can order cards from Brock.

What Is Career Expo?

A question frequently asked in the Career Resource Centre is, “What can I do with my degree?” The second most popular question is, “Where can I find a job?” Career Services has created an event to help students find work and decide what they would like to pursue after graduation all in one day!

The seventh annual Career & Post-Graduate Expo is an event in which over 120 employers, non-profit organizations and post-graduate institutions come to Brock to recruit and network with the best and brightest we have to offer. It is set up trade show style where students can visit the booths of exhibitors that interest them and find out more information that could be valuable when deciding on a career.

Career Expo features a wide variety of exhibitors, all of whom are excited and eager to talk to Brock students about opportunities available to them. If you need a job, are looking to travel, want to get some professional development or are unsure about what to do after graduation, Career Expo is the event for you.

The Career & Post-Graduate Expo will this year be held on
Tuesday November 8, 2011
from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
in the Ian D. Beddis Gymnasium.

This is a free event but registration is required and can be done from Career Zone. A business casual dress code will be in effect and a full list of exhibitors is available online on the Career Services website and on our notice boards around campus in October. TD Mentorship

Are you interested in learning more about the financial services industry? 

Career Services works with TD Bank Financial Group to provide a unique opportunity for Brock students to be mentored by various TD staff, promoting career planning and industry advice. Students will also be hired to work part time as a Customer Service Representative 15-20 hours a week as part of the TD Mentorship Program.

The mentorship component of the program will involve meeting with various TD professionals on a monthly basis to learn more about their position and career path. Different areas these staff come from include Commercial Banking and Human Resources, as well as many others! Students will meet with their mentors from January – April.

This is a fantastic opportunity to combine a valuable work experience with a mentoring relationship with a professional - so don't miss out on this opportunity if your future may involve working in the financial sector of the business world.

Balancing the University Life?!

As students we want to make the most of our University days- attending lectures and seminars, completing work and assignments on time, cheering on the Brock Badger sports teams, and volunteering throughout the community. On top of all that a part-time job, going home to celebrate a family birthday, spending time with new friends, participating in intramurals, meeting with Ta's and Professors, and planning career paths.

Oh and don't forget all the distractions that keep you from doing all that- like keeping up-to-date on the latest Facebook layout, or trying to beat your friend at Call of Duty. Watching the newest episode of Modern Family, or cheering on the Leafs, all while Tweeting about what your not doing, but need to do.

Plus the little things we do that eat at our time like dishes, laundry, cooking, cleaning, taking out garbage, waiting for the bus, being angry and the bus, charging your iPhone, waiting on RIM, calling for cabs, running for cabs, standing in line at Timmies, searching for a computer on campus...

And this is just what I can think of...the list is endless.

So how can one make the most of our University days while still creating a balance between school and life?

This is where Career Services Mentorship Plus comes in handy. This is a program specifically designed to help balance your life. As a first year mentee you will have a senior student mentor, in second year you will be in a peer group, and upper year students can either be a mentor to first years, or be a mentee to a mentor from the community. Its a great program that will help to assist you as you try creating a balance

Graduation, now what?

Another graduation ceremony has come and gone at Brock University - another group of graduates finally received their degree this past weekend at Brock's Fall Convocation.
But possessing a fancy piece of paper and being done school at an undergraduate level seems to beg the following question...

Now what?

To all those students, graduated or not, Career Services is here to help you answer that question! Graduating can lead to many different paths - directly entering the work force, pursuing graduate school, an internship, or a post-graduate diploma program as a few examples. Career Services can help you with the career planning process and assist you in determining what the next stage in your life could be.

Not to mention, the annual Career & Post-Graduate Expo is returning to Brock on November 8th, so come prepared to find employment opportunities, volunteer positions, and representatives from schools that offer post-graduate programs in nearly every discipline.
